The hooks and boot dryers and charging ports are a bit redundant, given that the Humbird has ski storage in the form of the fanciest custom European made ski lockers you can imagine, with boot and glove dryers and more outlets, all guest controllable via smartphone app (under finishing touches and will be ready for next winter). As I said, it’s the little things that matter, and here they really add up. ![]() Why? Because the folks who planned it know skiing and snowboarding, know that phones and other electronics have much shorter battery life in the cold, and that ski travelers often have more chargeables these days, from heated gloves to boot heaters to GoPros. Even the seats at the lobby bar have USB ports. On a very practical level, they put in more extra outlets and USB ports than I have ever seen in another hotel. Toiletries are also locally made, natural, high-end products, all the wood furniture is custom, and because of the great views to Lake Pend Oreille and possibility of wildlife sightings, each room has binoculars. ![]() Coffee makers come supplied with award-winning Evans Brothers coffee, roasted in Sandpoint, and the cool mugs are locally handmade pottery. Other in-room touches of note? Not surprisingly, the developers were dissatisfied with the generally mediocre state of hotel blackout shades, so they sought out serious ones that are as dark as it gets. When was the last time your hotel had that? Every room also has as a high-end Molekule air purifier, always a good idea but extra desirable in the age of COVID. ![]() Less than a month later, I saw that every room in the Humbird has one - even though it’s a quiet place. As I pondered this, I realized that in 25 years of traveling to famed luxury hotels around the globe of every shape and size, this was a feature I had never seen. After my stay I wondered why they did not equip rooms with white noise machines, a modest investment compared to the Italian espresso maker or bedside tablets. Guestrooms are well appointed, and also have a lot of living space.
